Apple admits to Slowing down its older phones but theres a reason for it

Apple has admitted to slowing down older models of the iPhone to prevent them from shutting down,  their reason behind this, according to Apple’s letter, is due to the iPhones age, their ageing batteries can’ deliver enough power to properly power the processor. So Apple slows them down a bit in order to keep the older devices from unexpectedly shutting down.

Its worth noting that many of Apples competitors don’t do this and it tends to result in more shuts downs in rival older devices. However the tech firm has made an apology to its customers and it has said that from the end of January the cost of replacing a battery on iPhone 6 or later models will be cut from £79 to £25 in the UK and in US it was reduced to $29, which represents an impressive discount over the $80’s Apple usually charges.

iOS 9 will be all about speed and performance

iOS 9 will be all about speed, performance and viele-fans-und-designer-machen-sich-bereits-gedanken-wie-das-apple-iphone-6-aussehen-koennte-fixing bugs according to a website called metro and 9to5mac.  These websites claim that the leaks about iOS 9 came from Apples own engineering team.

This will be good news because iOS 8 has been beset with problems with stability and performance since its launch back in September of last year. Which has resulted in numerous complaints from its customers. Frequent releases to the os that have added more and more features overtime have taken its toll on the os.

Further details about iOS 9 will be released in June at Apples Worldwide Developers Conference.

This update addresses a number of minor problems that have been experienced by some users such as passwords not being recognised when entering Apple ID passwords for FaceTime and Messages.

The other problems this update addressed were related to spotlight not being able to display app results and there was a problem that prevented multitasking gestures from functioning on the iPad.

After a considerable amount of rumours, Apple has finally bought Beats Musiciphone 5 eb version for $3 billion dollars.

From Apple’s press release:

“Apple® today announced it has agreed to acquire the critically acclaimed subscription streaming music service Beats Music, and Beats Electronics, which makes the popular Beats headphones, speakers and audio software. As part of the acquisition, Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre will join Apple. Apple is acquiring the two companies for a total of $3 billion, consisting of a purchase price of approximately $2.6 billion and approximately $400 million that will vest over time.

Apple’s deep commitment to music fans, artists, songwriters and the music industry is something special.”

IOS 8 what we expect

IOS_6_Home_ScreenThe rumours suggest that iOS 8 is coming this Autumn with a redesigned iphone 6. The main features of iOS 8 are expected to be pre announced by Apple this summer, there has been a few rumours flying around that have already given us some information about what to expect.

Firstly iOS 8 is said to have a greater emphases on health than iOS 7, apple may also integrate it health apps to work with the iWatch, which is rumoured to be in development. It could even come with an app called “Healthbook” that will be able to drag fitness-related information from both the M7 motion co-processor included in the iPhone 5s and sensors that will be included within the iWatch.

However iOS 8 is not expected to feature many design changes like iOS 7 had. Instead Apple is more likely to focus on polishing and updating the existing features of the os such as its Maps, Siri and its iCloud support.

It is also rumoured that Apple’s iTunes own radio streaming music service is likely to be moved from its music app to a standalone app, according to a new report from9to5Mac.

iOS 8 is also expected to come with a new payment system that will be fully integrated into the operating software touch id system.

It remains to seen whether or not all these features will be included within the os. We won’t fully know until the new os gets released alongside the iphone 6 which is likely to take place in the autumn.

iOS 7 is to resemble Windows and will be very flat

Various rumours are coming out that suggest that iOS 7 is to IOS_6_Home_Screenresemble the Windows os and it will look very flat and be more simplistic by nature.

If these rumours are true then it is a step way from its current design, which has remained relatively similar since day one. According to to 9to5Mac it could prove to be a difficult transformation for iPhone users, who are accustomed to the current iOS design.

However this new simplistic look could lead to a downscaling of heavy textures, glossiness and real-life digital elements such as the yellow notepad.

Other rumours have suggested that iOS 7 will have redesigned tool Windows_Phone_8_StartScreenbars and tab bars. There is also a likely hood that the os will come with new-look icons for Apple’s native apps.

But it is likely in reality knowing how apple operates, that the changes will be mainly on the cosmetic level and the core apps and the system would still function largely the same as it did before.

The details of the iOS 7 are expected to be revealed at the forthcoming WWDC  event in June.

Evasi0n is the most popular jailbreak of all time

ipad mini 1 jaibrokenAccording to Alexa, since the launch of the jailbreak 6 days ago the jailbreak website called Evasion has seen an unprecedented amount of visitors. Almost seven million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners have cracked Apple’s restrictions on their devices using the jail breaking tool.

Jay Freeman, the administrator of the app store for jailbroken devices known as Cydia also confirms this by stating,”As of Thursday night, Cydia the alternative app store had received visits from 5.15 million iPhones, 1.35 million iPads, and 400,000 iPod touches that were jailbroken with evasi0n, the first jail breaking software for the iPhone 5 and iOS 6.1.”

He also says: “That makes the iOS-hacking app the fastest-adopted jailbreak software of all time”.

There are a few reasons behind the popularity of this jailbreak. Firstly there is a much larger number of iOS devices than ever before circulating around than when there was a previous jailbreak available.  Apple sold 136 million phones in 2012, according to the latest figures from analyst firm Canalys.

The other reason fuelling the popularity is the fact that Apple locks down too many too many things on iOS devices. People desperately just want more options, like what Android users are accustomed too such as the option to customise their phone appearance or the option to choose their favourite app what has been banned by apple.

Apple unfortunately seem to be slowly gaining an advantage in this constant cat and mouse game,  because Apple are getting better that keeping jailbreak hackers at bay through improved security. It took hackers as much as 136 days to crack iOS 6.1, compared to just 98 days for the iPhone 4S, 38 days for the iPhone 4, and just 14 days for the iPhone 3GS. Who knows when iOS7 is released how long it will take for the jailbreak to become available, their could become a time where is no jailbreak possible. Apple really need to allow users to do more with their devices. If they continue not to listen, then they will continue to loose customers to Android.

Apple recaptures its market lead in the US

Apple has recaptured its market lead in the US over the Android OS. The twelve week period ending in late October sees Apple gaining as much as 48.1 percent of the market while Android fell back to a close 46.7 percent of the market during this period.

The last time Apple held a lead in the US was just after the company launched  the previous iPhone called the 4S. It then went on to hold it’s market share for almost three consecutive periods before Android reclaimed it’s market lead again.

The research firm Worldpanel ComTech claims that the iPhone 5’s launch sales helped Apple to regain it market lead over Android, which is at 48.1% of the market compared to its rival’s 46.7%.

Research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech also believes that Apple will hold this lead, maybe even pushing forward a bit and beat its previous high of 49.3 percent on the way to its highest ever share of the US smartphone market.

Outside of the United States Apple does not seem to be as popular. For example in Germany Android accounts for 73.9 percent of sales in Germany and in Spain the OS is even more popular at 81.7 percent. They state that:

“Germany remains a tough market for Apple with its share falling by 5.1 percentage points over the past year.  The Samsung Galaxy S3 has taken almost a quarter of the country’s smartphone sales over the past 12 weeks to boost Android yet further.” – Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech

However it is unlikely that Apple will be able to maintain its lead in the US for too long, which due to the fact that many product that run the Android os are usually sold at a much competitive price than Apple products are.

A new maps app called Sparkling maps that offers Google maps has hit the app store

A new maps app called Sparkling maps that offers Google maps has hit the app store.  This will come as an ideal solution for those looking to get back to Google’s standard of mapping that offers it’s users, reliable maps that offer a decent amount of  detail on the maps.  This app also includes access to Google’s infamous street view. Lastly this map even offers turn by turn navigation, which Google official iOS 5 map app never did.

However this app does have some short cummings when comparing it to the Google’s iOS 5 official version. The text is often very small to see on the maps also it’s not possible to use the maps when offline, like you could on Google’s iOS 5 official version. Lastly there also seems to be a problem with the street view maps option. Yes you can access the street view option with ease, but once you go into street view mode you are not able to zoom in or out like you could within the official iOS 5 Google version.

Overall despite it’s short Cummings, which will hopefully be resolved soon by the developers. It’s a useful app for anyone who wants the first class mapping experience that iOS users once enjoyed with Google maps. Currently there is no other app that can offer this level of map detail, street view, and turn by turn navigation like this one does. So what are you waiting for it’s a bargain for only $0.99 or 0.69p from the UK app store.

Update 29-11-12

I would like to post an update on this app and say that now the developer have produced and released an updated version of this app that has addressed most of the problems that were previously raised by users.
